Cultural AR gifting experience
An AR keepsake that animates a traditional red packet, greeting recipients in five Singaporean dialects to celebrate cultural heritage.
For the Lunar New Year, the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre launched a unique festive experience blending tradition with technology. The result was the “Talking Red Packet,” a Spark AR effect that transformed a physical red packet into an interactive cultural e-greeting.
Using their phone’s camera, recipients could bring the illustrated ox mascot to life. The AR character would greet them in Mandarin and five major Singaporean dialects: Cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew, Hakka, and Hainanese. The AR markers were seamlessly integrated into the packet’s design, enhancing the traditional keepsake.
The project required a careful balance of art and technology. A custom workflow was developed using sprites to merge and optimize all illustrative elements and audio clips into a single, lightweight scene that met Spark AR’s 4MB limit.
